(Chem.) A dyeing matter extracted from the roots of Alkanna
tinctoria, which gives a fine deep red color.
2. (Bot.) (a) A
boraginaceous herb (Alkanna tinctoria) yielding the dye;
orchanet. (b) The similar plant Anchusa
officinalis; bugloss; also, the American puccoon.
